  15. <p>     DIED. Gene Roddenberry, 70, visionary television producer
  16. and creator of Star Trek; of a heart attack; in Los Angeles. A
  17. former airline pilot and L.A. motorcycle cop, he turned to
  18. writing, creating episodes for Dragnet and Have Gun Will Travel.
  19. His Star Trek series (1966-69) imagined a future of
  20. intergalactic travel and utopian possibility that spawned
  21. millions of passionately devoted fans--"Trekkies"--and six
  22. motion pictures. Said Roddenberry: "Treating the TV audience
  23. like an intelligent species pays off."
